What are the Pancha Narasimha Kshetrams?

“Pancha Narasimha Kshetrams” means the five sacred places of Lord Narasimha. The grouping most often described for the Vijayawada region, along the Krishna river, is:

  1. Mangalagiri: Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, near Vijayawada
  2. Vedadri: Yogananda Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, in NTR district
  3. Mattapalli (also spelt Mattampalli): Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, in Telangana
  4. Vadapalli (Vadapally): Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at the Krishna–Musi confluence, in Telangana
  5. Ketavaram (Kethavaram): Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy on the Krishna’s Andhra Pradesh bank
A note on the route and the name

An early draft of this circuit listed only four temples (Mattapalli, Vadapalli, Ketavaram and Vedadri). The traditional five include Mangalagiri, so it is part of both packages below. Tour operators and local tradition sometimes use the name differently, and Vedadri itself is also called a Pancha Narasimha Kshetram because five forms of Narasimha are worshipped there. We use the Krishna-river circuit above. Mattapalli and Vadapalli are in Telangana, so the trip crosses a state border.

Spellings vary between sources and signboards, so use the temple name and nearest town when asking for directions.

The route and why the order matters

The temples sit in a loop around the Krishna river, so the best order avoids doubling back. We recommend: Vijayawada → Mangalagiri → Vedadri → Mattapalli → Vadapalli → Ketavaram → Vijayawada.

  • Mangalagiri first (about 10–15 km out): it is close, and visiting early avoids the risk of missing its darshan hours later in the day. Ending the loop at Mangalagiri would save roughly 25–30 km, but only works if the temple is open when you arrive. Confirm its timings with the temple.
  • Vedadri second: it lies off the Vijayawada–Hyderabad highway (NH65), commonly reached by a turn near Chillakallu, around 60–85 km from Vijayawada by pilgrim accounts.
  • Mattapalli third: reached via Kodad and Huzurnagar, roughly 140–150 km from Vijayawada.
  • Vadapalli, then Ketavaram: Ketavaram is on the opposite bank of the Krishna from Mattapalli. Pilgrims have historically reached it by road via Piduguralla rather than across the river, so it is practical by car but adds a long leg. Your driver should confirm the current road.
  • Return via Guntur to Vijayawada.

Total distance is roughly 400–520 km depending on the exact roads. Leg figures come from pilgrim guidance and map data and are approximate, so please treat them as planning figures.

Package A: 1-day itinerary (indicative)

All five in one day is possible only as a long, demanding day, and it can fail if queues are long. Driving time and temple time are separate: about 10–12 hours on the road plus roughly 45–60 minutes per temple for darshan, walking and parking, and meal breaks.

  1. About 4:00 amLeave Vijayawada.
  2. About 5:00–6:30 amMangalagiri (confirm opening time first).
  3. About 8:30–10:30 amVedadri, including time for the steps and darshan.
  4. About 12:30–2:00 pmMattapalli and lunch. Check whether the temple closes for part of the afternoon.
  5. About 3:30–5:00 pmVadapalli.
  6. About 6:00–7:30 pmKetavaram, if it is still open.
  7. About 9:00–11:00 pmBack in Vijayawada, if nothing runs late.

Many temples close for a few hours in the afternoon and in the evening, and we have not verified timings, so the later stops may not be possible. If any temple is closed when you arrive, you may miss it. That is the honest reason we recommend two days. If you only have one day, a lighter plan of Mangalagiri, Vedadri and optionally Mattapalli is far more comfortable.

Package B: 2-day itinerary (recommended)

Day 1: Vijayawada to Mattapalli area

  1. MorningDepart around 6:00 am. Visit Mangalagiri first.
  2. Late morningDrive towards Vedadri and visit the temple on the Krishna bank.
  3. AfternoonContinue via Kodad and Huzurnagar to Mattapalli, with lunch on the way.
  4. EveningDarshan at Mattapalli if open, then an overnight halt nearby.

Overnight halt: accommodation near Mattapalli is limited. Towns on the route such as Huzurnagar, Kodad and Miryalaguda are more practical bases; book ahead and confirm availability yourself, because we do not have hotel partnerships to promise.

Day 2: Mattapalli to Vijayawada

  1. MorningVadapalli at the confluence of the Krishna and Musi.
  2. MiddayDrive via Piduguralla to Ketavaram.
  3. AfternoonReturn through Guntur to Vijayawada.

Day 1 is roughly 170–230 km and Day 2 roughly 240–320 km, approximately. Because the pace is easier, there is room for a longer darshan queue, a lunch break and a rest for older travellers.

The five temples: what to know

Each temple has a traditional account and, in some cases, documented history. We separate them below. Timings, dress rules and special darshan details can change, so please contact the temple or check official information before you travel; we have not listed timings because we could not verify them.

1. Mangalagiri: Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy

On Mangalagiri hill, about 10–15 km from Vijayawada on the Guntur road. Tradition holds that the deity accepts panakam (jaggery water) offered by devotees, which is why it is known as the Panakala Narasimha temple. There are also shrines at the foot of the hill, and the temple involves steps or a climb. Allow extra time on festival days.

2. Vedadri: Sri Yogananda Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy

In the village of Vedadri, Jaggayyapeta mandal, NTR district, on the bank of the Krishna. Tradition links the hill to the retrieval of the Vedas, and five forms of Narasimha are said to be worshipped here (Jwala, Saligrama, Veera, Yoga and Lakshmi Narasimha). The temple is on a rise with steps from the river side.

3. Mattapalli: Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy

Mattapalli (Mattampalli), in Telangana, is on the Krishna. Pilgrim accounts describe the sanctum as inside a cave that extends towards the river. It became more widely known in recent decades through the efforts of the scholar Sri Mukkur Lakshmi Narasimhacharya Swami. It is the most remote stop and the main reason this circuit needs an early start.

4. Vadapalli: Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy

At the confluence of the Krishna and the Musi (Moosi), in Telangana, roughly 20 km from Miryalaguda. By tradition the sage Agastya installed the deity here, and some accounts name it the first of the five. Devotees also recount a tradition of two lamps in the sanctum, one of which appears to flicker as if breathing. This is a devotional belief rather than a documented fact.

5. Ketavaram: Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy

On the Andhra Pradesh bank of the Krishna, opposite Mattapalli, reached by road via Piduguralla. We found less verified detail for this temple than for the others, so please confirm directions and timings locally before relying on them.
