Vijayawada to Dindi Resort and the Godavari Backwaters: Trip Guide

What Dindi is, and why people go

Dindi is a village in Konaseema, in the Godavari delta of Andhra Pradesh, on the Vashishta Godavari, a distributary that marks the southern edge of the Konaseema region. The setting is coconut groves, paddy fields, wide slow water and small canals, which is why travel writers often compare it to the backwaters of Kerala. Konaseema is said to mean “land’s corner”, and the river here is 1–2 km wide.

People go for a slow break rather than a sightseeing list: a river-facing resort, a boat or houseboat outing if one is available, sunsets on the water, and a drive through the delta. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) runs the Haritha Coconut Country Resort at Dindi, and a few private resorts are also on the river.

Distance and time from Vijayawada

Reported distances from Vijayawada to Dindi are about 175–180 km. Roads through Konaseema are narrower and slower than the highway, so plan on roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours each way. Rajahmundry is the nearest airport (about 80–100 km away) and Rajahmundry railway station is around 82–90 km, so some visitors combine Dindi with a train or flight.

One day or an overnight stay?

With roughly ten hours of driving, a same-day return from Vijayawada leaves only a few hours at the water. It is doable if you leave early and treat it as a drive plus a long lunch and a boat ride. For most people, one night is a far better plan, because the point of Dindi is to slow down.

  • Same-day trip: leave around 6:00 am, reach by late morning, lunch and a river outing, and start back by 4:00 pm so you are home around 9:30–10:00 pm.
  • Overnight: arrive in the afternoon, enjoy the evening on the river, spend the next morning there and return after lunch.

Things to do around Dindi

  • The river and the resort: the draw is the Godavari itself. A riverside walk or a quiet afternoon at the resort is the core experience.
  • Houseboat and boat rides: a travel report on the Telugu states describes APTDC’s jetty at Haritha Coconut Country Resort as the main option for houseboat experiences. Availability, timings and rules vary, so check with the resort or APTDC before you plan around it, and do not assume a booking is available.
  • Antarvedi: about 20 km away, where the Vashishta Godavari meets the Bay of Bengal (the Sagara Sangamam), and a known temple town. It adds a drive, so it suits an overnight trip better than a same-day one.
  • The Konaseema drive: palm-lined lanes, canals and ferries make the journey itself part of the trip. Take your time.

Resorts and booking

A few resorts operate along the river. Which one suits you depends on budget and facilities, and rooms with river views fill up on weekends and holidays. We do not have partnerships with any resort, and we cannot guarantee availability or rates, so book accommodation yourself and ask the resort about boat and houseboat options at the time.

When to go

Winter, roughly November to February, is generally the most comfortable season in coastal Andhra, with lighter humidity and cooler evenings. Summer is hot and humid. Monsoon and cyclone season can disrupt river outings and the coastal roads, so check the forecast and confirm with the resort before you travel.

Vehicle and fare

A sedan works for up to four. Families with luggage, or friends travelling together, will be more comfortable in an SUV or MPV over a five-hour drive, and a tempo traveller suits larger groups where available. Read our vehicle guide if you are unsure.

We do not publish a fixed fare. The price depends on the vehicle, kilometres, whether the car waits or you take a one-way drop, an overnight halt, tolls, parking and taxes. Tell us the plan and we will quote for it. Our one-way versus round-trip guide explains how the booking type changes the quote.
