About Manginapudi Beach
Manginapudi Beach, popularly known as Bandar Beach, is a quiet seaside spot about 11 km from Machilipatnam in Krishna district, on the Bay of Bengal. The Incredible India tourism portal describes it as a calm, uncommercialised beach with a historic past, from the era when Machilipatnam was a prominent port. Machilipatnam’s own shoreline sits on an estuary, so Manginapudi is where people go for the actual sea.
It is a good fit if you want a sea beach without a long journey: from Vijayawada it is a two-hour drive, so a relaxed day trip works well. The beach is generally open from early morning until evening, and the tourism portal notes no entry fee.
Distance and travel time
Vijayawada to Machilipatnam is about 68–70 km, roughly 1.5 hours by road, according to travel writing and the Incredible India portal. Manginapudi is around 11 km beyond the town, which brings the trip to roughly 80 km each way and about two hours of driving. Leave extra time on weekends and festival days.
The route and stops on the way
The road runs south-east from Vijayawada through Gannavaram and Gudivada, then through Pedana on to Machilipatnam. Your driver will confirm the best road for the day.
Pedana: Kalamkari
Pedana, about 7 km before Machilipatnam, is known for hand-printed Kalamkari textiles made with natural dyes, and Pedana Kalamkari received a GI tag in 2013. If you want to buy fabric or see how it is made, you can ask your driver to stop at a workshop. Visiting hours and what is on show vary, so do not assume a particular business is open to visitors.
Machilipatnam
A historic port town. Relics of the old Bandar fort can be visited, and the town has a long Kalamkari tradition. Panduranga Swamy temple at Chilakalapudi, near the city, is a known pilgrimage site. Treat these as optional additions rather than a promise that they fit in one day.
What to expect at the beach
- Atmosphere: calm and largely unspoilt rather than commercial, with a natural bay and shallow water in places.
- Datta Rameswaram: locals call the area by this name because of a set of wells for bathing, said to recall those at Rameswaram. It is a religious and traditional association, not a documented attraction you should plan your whole day around.
- Food: small stalls near the beach have long sold snacks and drinks, and the coast is known for seafood. Facilities vary, so carry water and expect basic amenities.
- Festivals: the beach draws large crowds on Magha Pournami, when pilgrims come to bathe, and the Masula Beach Festival has been held here. Dates change each year, so check locally if you want to join or avoid the crowds.
Beach safety
Sea conditions can change quickly. Enter the water only where it is clearly safe, stay close to the shore, supervise children continuously, and heed any signs or instructions from local officials or lifeguards. Avoid swimming after dark or in rough water, and keep valuables in the car.
Best time to go
The tourism portal describes the winter months of November to February as particularly inviting for cooler weather and beach walks. Summer afternoons are hot with little shade, so go early. Heavy rain and cyclone warnings can make the coast unsuitable, so check the forecast the day before.
